VINCE’S 2017 POSITIONAL BREAKDOWN: SAFETY FIRST

COULD A SAFETY BE THE FIRST PICK IN THE DRAFT?

a

OF COURSE NOT, HOWEVER IF WE TAKE AWAY POSITIONAL VALUE AND JUST LOOK AT THE BEST FOOTBALL PLAYER IN THIS YEARS DRAFT. MY MONEY WOULD BE ON JAMAL ADAMS (LSU), FIVE MINUTES INTO WATCHING HIS FILM I CUT IT OFF AND MOVED ON TO THE NEXT PROSPECT. ADAMS CAN DO IT ALL AS A SAFETY, HE’S A SURE TACKLER, CAN PLAY IN THE BOX AND COVER THE DEEP 3RD OF YOUR SECONDARY. SOME TEAM WILL TAKE ADAMS IN THE TOP 5 AND GET AN ALL PRO PLAYER. ALSO MALIK HOOKER (OHIO ST.) IS A NATURAL BALL HAWK, HE’S SECOND TO NONE AT TRACKING THE BALL IN THE AIR. OPPOSING TEAMS OFTEN AVOID HOOKER AND HIS BIG PLAY ABILITY ONCE THE BALL IS IN THE AIR. HOOKER REMINDS ME OF EARL THOMAS WITH HIS ABILITY TO COVER GROUND, I EXPECT HOOKER TO BE A TOP 10 PICK EVEN WITH HIS INJURY CONCERNS.

NOW ON TO THE REST OF THE CLASS, HOOKER AND ADAMS ARE THE CLEAR CUT BEST PLAYERS IN THIS POSITION GROUP. BUT THERE IS STILL TALENT HERE, OBI MELIFONWU (IS A BIG PHYSICAL SAFETY WITH THE COVER SKILLS TO MATCH WITH TODAY’S NFL TIGHT ENDS. BUDDA BAKER (WASHINGTON) REMINDS ME OF THE HONEY BADGER WITH HIS VERSATILE SKILL SET, IN FACT I WOULD EXPECT BAKER TO HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF ROLE AS TYRANN MATHIEU. JUSTIN EVANS IS A PHYSICAL SAFETY HE BRINGS THE “BOOM” WHEN HE MAKES CONTACT. FORGOTTEN GUYS LIKE EDDIE JACKSON (ALABAMA) COULD BE A LATE ROUND STEAL FOR SOME TEAMS, HE ALSO ADDS VALUE AS A RETURNER. MARCUS WILLIAMS (UTAH) IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLAYERS IN THIS DRAFT THAT COULD SNEAK IN THE END OF THE FIRST ROUND. MARCUS MAYE (FLA) REMINDS ME A LOT OF HIS FORMER TEAMMATE KEANU NEAL, I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED IF MAYE IS DAY-1 STARTER REGARDLESS OF WHERE HE’S DRAFTED.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST JABRILL PEPPERS DOESN’T HAVE A NATURAL POSITION, I BELIEVE HE’S BETTER SUITED AS A SAFETY. HE’S A TALENTED FOOTBALL PLAYER FOR SURE BUT WHATEVER TEAM TAKES HIM WILL NEED A PLAN TO UTILIZE HIM CORRECTLY.
